Gannet in Flight at Muriwai

From July/August to April/May each year, Australasian gannets (morus serrator) are nesting at Muriwai (map). Originally the gannets were only on Oaia Island, some distance out at sea, but since about 1975 they started taking over the Island of Motutara as well as the headlands of Otakamiro Point on the mainland. There are two viewing platforms, allowing the visitors to watch the nesting birds, and of course to admire their skillful flight (and their less than elegant waddle on land).
