Silver Fern

Next to the kiwi, the silver fern is probably the most recognisable symbol of national identity for New Zealanders. It is the emblem of the All Blacks (the national rugby team), and was widely promoted as a symbol that should grace a new flag for the country (the debate about a new flag seems to have died down again).

This picture shows the rosette of fronds of a silver fern tree (cyathea dealbata) from above, shot from our deck. At the bottom left, a twig of Kawakawa (macropiper excelsum) pushes into the picture.

  1. Nice pattern of leaves. I like the graphical impact.
