Junction (Peter Nicholls, 2009)

This work by Dunedin sculptor Peter Nicholls is a symbolic representation of the confluence of the Waituarangi and Whau streams in Olympic Park (left of the picture, map). These streams are part of the ‘Whau portage‘, the most direct connection (about 3km length) across the isthmus between Manukau and Waitemata harbours. Maori used to drag their canoes overland along this route.

At present the immediate surroundings of the sculpture are a somewhat unkempt no man’s land between the railway line (behind the viewer), the velodrome (behind the fence in the background) and Olympic Park — one can only hope that with the completion of the railway project the area will be upgraded.
