Purple Rock Crab

When you do a bit of rock hopping on the way to the gap in Piha, you will be watched by numerous attentive eyes: in all cracks there are purple rock crabs (leptograpsus variegatus) — usually they scamper away in a hurry before you have a chance to get a closer look. Here I was lucky, finding about half a dozen, apparently without escape route. Aren’t they just beautiful?

  1. Wow. Absolutely gorgeous looking things. The colours are amazing. Great shot too.

  2. Absolutely beautiful! You were lucky, and you made the most of it. I’d love to see one of these guys.
