Purple Rock Crab

When you do a bit of rock hopping on the way to the gap in Piha, you will be watched by numerous attentive eyes: in all cracks there are purple rock crabs (leptograpsus variegatus) — usually they scamper away in a hurry before you have a chance to get a closer look. Here I was lucky, finding about half a dozen, apparently without escape route. Aren’t they just beautiful?

Absolutely beautiful! You were lucky, and you made the most of it. I’d love to see one of these guys.
