Kereru (NZ Wood Pigeon, Hemiphaga Novaeseelandiae)

This kereru (NZ Wood Pigeon, Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) is resting on the branch of a ti tree, having gorged itself on the berries of our neighbour’s puriri tree behind it.

  1. It’s a handsome pigeon. Do these pigeons perch on city buildings like the pigeons we have in North America?

  2. @ EG Wow, Canada: Thanks for your comment. Kereru live in bush environment, also in some bush enclaves in the city suburbs. But they are not “street birds” like the ubiquitous rock pigeon.

  3. A lovely shot. When we were in NZ I tried to take some photos but none of them were very good.
