Purple Flowers

These purple flowers have graced Scenic Drive for some weeks now, soon they will disappear. I don’t know what they are, and would not be surprised if they are classed as weeds. The large leaves of these shrubs are a great sight year-round.

Can anybody identify the plant?

Thanks to Ewen Cameron of the Auckland Museum I now have the ID: Bartlettina sordida, described as “(attractive) environmental weed”.

The plants are members of the aster family, and native to Mexico.
