Pasifika 2011: David and Saute

David and Saute

David and Saute

Pasifika is one of the biggest festivals in the Auckland calendar, an occasion in which last Saturday an estimated 250,000 people converged onto Western Springs to celebrate the diversity of Pacific cultures. On a backdrop of brilliant weather, friendly faces abounded as we were treated to displays of song, dance, arts and crafts, not to forget the numerous food stalls.

At the Tokelauan village we met David and Saute and got chatting. Their son Opetaia runs a contemporary Pacific band (Te Vaka), and it appears that most of the extended family play some part in that. I asked David if I could take a picture — and he thought that would be so much better if his wife was also in it. I salute a lovely couple.
