Magnolia Grandiflora Seed Cone

Magnolia Grandiflora Seed Cone

We have seen the flowers of Magnolia Grandiflora here and here, now it is autumn and the seeds are ripening.

Ash street is lined with mature grandiflora trees, some rising up to about 8 meters and trunks measuring over 50 cm diameter. That’s where I found these spectacularly coloured fruiting cones. Starting out in a dull green, they turn a vivd red and eventually the seeds in even brighter skins pop out of their chambers – a delight for the birds who like the fleshy cover of the kernels. There was plenty of birdsong up in the trees, I noticed thrushes, blackbirds, mynah birds and starlings. The coloration is shortlived, as the cones brown off rapidly after the seed cells start opening up.
