Filipe Tohi and "Sisimatala'a"

Sopolemalama Filipe Tohi shows a survey of his work at the Mangere Arts Centre — Nga Tohu o Uenuku until October 22. He is Tongan, living in New Zealand since 1978. The show comprises works of over 30 years of artistic practice, some wood carvings and mainly work in andesite stone; equally of interest are drawings from his sketch books. Filipe is also an expert in the art of lalava, the tying together of structural elements in buildings and boats (and his website is titled “lalava.net“). Some of the geometry of this tradition returns in the sculptures. (I will show a picture of my favorite piece from this exhibition on Sunday in black and white.)
