New Zealand Fantail

New Zealand Fantail

The New Zealand Fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa — piwakawaka in Maori) is an insectivore, very common in the bush around here. They are livewires, never staying in one place, always flitting about, hunting for insects. We often see them accompanying flocks of wax eyes.

As the name suggests, they can fan out their tail feathers in their aerobatics — but that is not shown in this picture.
