In 2010, horse racing at the Avondale Racecourse was suspended, due to financial difficulties of the club. In October, racing resumed, and I went to yesterday’s race meeting. Some 10 minutes before the races, the horses are called up for “plate inspection” (where their plates are checked, and the markings of the horse are verified), and then the handlers parade them around in the “birdcage”, to allow punters a close look at their favorites.
