ASB Wynyard Quarter

The ASB Headquarters in the Wynyard Quarter (see here and here)is the first new corporate building since this precinct opened up. On a recent visit to the area, I found it had a brand new top, quite different from all earlier sketches which variously referred to a “funnel” or “turban” not to mention “meringue” or “volcano” — one wonders where they hid that funnel that was actually delivered, in the square box?. I could not find any information or comment on the web about this shiny new elegant shape.

Edit: The answer was in Element magazine (25/02/2013): “Atop the cube is a light scoop, a huge carbon fibre and kevlar structure engineered by Pure Design & Engineering and built by Yachting Development, the team that works on America‚Äôs Cup yachts.

The funnel will direct light to the lower floors through the atrium, and people down on the lane will be able to catch glimpses of the sky as they pass through.
