The Silo Park and Karanga Plaza in the Wynyard Quarter are celebrating a Summer of Sculpture (1 February to 15 March; exhibition in Silo 6 to 22 February). This work in Corten steel is by David McCracken (represented by Gow Langsford Gallery). From the catalogue:

Portrait of Mass and Transmission is both a continuation of current practice and a subtle change of direction. Cut and welded from corten steel plate, the composition relies on the intrinsic tensile nature of the steel to generate its looping folded form, and the rhythmic patterning to insinuate mass.”

Below is a picture of a similar work (Portrait of Traction and Transmission), displayed at the recent Headland Sculpture on the Gulf exhibition on Waiheke Island, winning the artist the Parsons Brinckerhoff Award for Engineering Excellence at that show. In the Headland catalogue notes, the artist comments: “This exhibition gives me an opportunity to resolve an ongoing issue of how to present these works. I have placed them standing vertically until now, but have always been unhappy with that orientation, [here] the sculpture is composed to fit into the setting.”
