Northern Club

The Northern Club on Princes Street started out as a “Gentlemen’s Club” in 1869, and might be viewed as the epitome of conservatism in Auckland. It has to be said, however, that since 1991 the club admits women.

The building was constructed in 1867 as the Royal Hotel, designed by Edward Mahoney. Wikipedia has an image of the building (ca. 1900) without its cloak of foliage shown here.

  1. Wow … looks amazing, also it was once a Royal Hotel. Do you mind if I add it to my Royal Collection … I have former Royals and international Royals.

  2. That’s quite a collection you have assembled, Joan! You are welcome to this one, shortlived as the building was in its use as hotel There was a Royal Hotel on Princes Street from 1842 on, seems to have moved about a bit?
