Auckland’s longest lava flow (11km) extends about 2km into the Waitemata Harbour, between Point Chevalier and Westmere. Aged about 28,000 years, it contrasts here with younger landmarks: the Auckland Harbour Bridge (completed 1959 – clip-ons 1969) and the volcanic island of Rangitoto (15th century).
