Atta Mediae (Samantha Lissette)

One of my favourite exhibits at the Sculpture in the Gardens exhibition. By Samantha Lissette.

Atta is a genus of leaf cutter ants, and the mediae are those ants in their social organisation which are specialised to the task of cutting and transporting the leaf pieces.

From the exhibition notes:

“The exoskeletons are created in an amour like style as an analogy for the uniforms worn by staff. This reflects ideas around how they work as a team. Each ant has an individual surface treatment to reflect the individuality everyone brings to a team.”

  1. This is great! These little guys have amazing agility and strength, but you don’t usually get a chance to really appreciate that in full size 🙂
