V Phalacrocoraces

Five Pied Shags

Five Pied Shags

In fluent Latin I present to you a group of five pied shags (pied cormorants in Australia), beaks pointing straight forward, eyes firmly looking sideways, as I moved closer to the end of O’Neills Bay on our Auckland West Coast.

Phalacrocorax varius is the latin name of the species, and if you google the plural of the word, you find that Pliny the Elder (AD23-79) wrote about them in his Natural History (and in Latin, he was fluent, I am not).

    Oh, these are cuties!
    Another wonderful capture, Paul!
