Energy, confidence and hope were the dominant sentiments at the opening of the Whau Arts Festival (October 16-19 at Avondale) last night. A community had rallied together under the banner of the arts to inspire and to turn a new leaf for a suburb, seemingly without a heart, yet full of people with imagination and aspirations. For months they have been busy planning, drumming up support, discussing ideas, creating, and finally it all came together. The old vacant site, where once a supermarket provided some focal point of the community, now again bustling with life after ten years of neglect – and the hope that a community centre could emerge in this place.
An enthusiastic crowd, speeches, performers – sadly I had to leave early, I missed the best photo opportunity: the blacksmith!
