Steve Crowcroft and Friends

We had a guided tour of the New Zealand Opera yesterday, presently rehearsing Tosca for Auckland performances September 17-27 (Wellington October 10-17). We got to watch some of the chorus rehearsal (no pictures), and got shown the stores and workshop, guided by Technical Manager Steve Crowcroft, ending in the wardrobe room where we got a comprehensive rundown of the many strands that weave together to get a production.

Today is Daffodil Day, the Cancer Society’s main event for fundraising and awareness (this year is the 25th anniversary for this event). The flowers in the picture are along Titirangi Road – the council has done us proud with a new planting.

Prunus Campanulata

The Taiwanese cherry (prunus campanulata) have been going strong for some weeks now. Some trees have finished their crop of flowers, while others are only just showing the first signs of pink. Lovely to behold – and, of course, classified a weed …

Which Colour Thread?

The Sewing Workshop at 13 Rosebank Road in Avondale has to be unique in all of New Zealand (if not further afield). A living museum of all things needlecraft, be it manual stitching or modern machinery, and detail. Cheerfully and knowledgeably presided over by John.

I remembered visiting the place a looong time ago when Mrs H was doing a fair bit of sewing etc for the kids.

Tasty Space Tea

Tasty Space Tea

“We put the tea in robot” was the sign at the roundabout – referring to the “Tea Lounge” event that has taken over one of the gallery spaces at Te Uru Contemporary Gallery for the weekend.

Drink some tea! Dance with T! Experience a Te Uru gallery space in an entirely new way. Tea Lounge is a collaborative installation featuring legendary video installation performance artist Linda T (of LTTV and D.A.N.C.E. Art Club) and Tasty Space Tea, a West Auckland collective who aim to provide tea as a way of creating temporary and accessible community spaces. They share the common aim of finding ways for visitors to collectively participate in the making of an art event. Tea Lounge will feature music, tea and dancing as well as a ‘performance zone’ where a live feed of dancing feet will be projected back into the gallery, providing a fun way to see yourself as part of the work.
