Jerome Kavanagh plays the putorino

At the recent Pasifika Festival, Jerome Kavanagh gave a demonstration of a range of maori musical instruments (taonga puoro). I only caught the tail end of this, when he played the putorino. One way of playing the instrument is shown here: blowing across the central opening – the pitch is controlled by embouchure as well as by the hand.

Very little is known about the taonga puoro, but in recent times great efforts have been made to collect what is known, and to reconstruct the musical possibilities of the instruments.

A fascinating looking instrument. This is the first I’ve heard of it.
