Sunnyvale Rail Bridge (Dan Mills)

In the course of upgrading the Auckland-Waitakere railway line, a number of big construction works got undertaken. The crossing of the Oratia Stream (two bridges, one for each track) incorporates pedestrian and cycle paths at the Sunnyvale station. The bridges are nondescript concrete structures, but the murals by Dan Mills (featured in this blog in connection with painted boxes) lift them a bit out of the ordinary.

The panel shown below has the inscription:

“Mural painted March 2010 by Dan + Bart, with assistance from … Hoani Waititi MaraeSunnyvale Primary SchoolBruce McLaren Intermediate School, and Waitakere City Council.”

Glen Eden Mural: Ladder Fern

I have an older photo of this mural, faded and tagged. So I was very pleased when I saw that the decorative wall had been given a new lease of life. Well, about half of the mural, anyway, the other half is hidden behind the shrubs on the right which are now quite big.

The mural is at the West Coast Road end of a seemingly unnamed lane connecting West Coast Road with Glenmall in Glen Eden. I could not find a signature anywhere.

New Lynn Cinema was built in 1993 (map), but closed in 2000, and is now home of a furniture shop. Some people feel strong enough about it to join a facebook group.

Manet in Glen Eden

When I was a student, I used to decorate my digs with inexpensive art prints. One of my favorites was “Le Fifre” (The Fife Player) by Manet. It came as quite a surprise to find it at the Glendale Road entrance of Glenmall in Glen Eden, together with another Manet painting: “Emile Zola” – the reading man and the books being a reference to the Glen Eden Book Exchange which is behind the wall.

Hidden behind the vegetation is also a shelf filled with books, and a portrait of a young girl – the daughter of the owner of the Book Exchange. Unfortunately, taggers leave their marks from time to time, and when the anti-graffiti squad arrive, parts of the mural may change colour. The mural was painted quite some years ago by Louis Statham (who has painted about 50 murals throughout the Auckland region), with costs shared between the Book Exchange and the Waitakere City Council.

More Mathematics

I have started ‘collecting’ corner shops. Shortly after I had taken a picture of this, the Croydon Dairy, the painters appeared, decking it out in a new livery, promoting mathematics big time. Had to do a re-shoot, of course (and change the title).
