This transformer stands at the intersection of Don Buck and Royal Roads, Massey (map). It shows some old wooden weatherboard houses of the type that may have been common in the area in times past. Also shown is a view of the City of Auckland across the upper harbour.

This transformer stands in Glengarry Road, close to the intersection with West Coast Road. It seems to nostalgically hark back to the past with its depiction of the old Post Office and Settlers Hall and yummy fruit. For years, after we first arrived here in 1970, we used to make pilgrimages to Oratia and Henderson to buy fruit straight from the orchards, sometimes picking our own. Now most of the orchards have given way to residential development, some are used for other crops (a strawberry plot is right beside this box), and a few seem to just wait to get the green light for development, trees looking sad, overgrown with lichen.

Apples, plums and old buildings – beautifully painted by Mandy Patmore.

The Community Hall at the junction of Don Buck and Red Hills Roads seems to be in the first instance the place of the Redhills Community Kindergarten, but there is wider scope: House, Indoor Bowls, Kung Fu, Cake Decorating, Fellowship and more. On the Red Hills Road side, you find this topical mural by Mandy Patmore (with a hand from Massey Primary). A beautiful Tui in a swirl of cowherd, and historic settler scenes.

Opposite of Bruce McLaren Intermediate School (in Bruce McLaren Road, Henderson – map) are two transformers, painted by Mandy Patmore with stencil work by the MPHS Young Believers (a youth group associated with the McLaren Park Henderson South community initiative). This is the green/black one of them, depicting leaves of some plants in the bush, and some of the creatures which inhabit (and eat) them. (The blue transformer may feature another time.)

There are several other examples of painted boxes where artists have involved local youths in the process – a great concept!
