It is a very pleasant place to sit and have your coffee, with the soothing green of the trees of Albert Park beside you. But when I visited, I found it was closed. The website explains: “Seasonal opening hours apply for the level 2 espresso bar” — I must have been out of season. There is another cafe on the first floor of the gallery.

Furniture at the end of Queens Wharf, beyond the Cloud. Unlike the examples at the Quay Street end, these pieces come without Morse code (and spelling mistakes).

Tiled Couch

If you drive along Richmond Road towards Ponsonby, you can’t miss this eyecatching couch. I don’t know if there is a story waiting to be told about it.

The koru motif seen on the back rest, a traditional pattern in Maori art (inspired by the shape of fern fronds), was brought into prominence by the artist Gordon Walters.

Apart from fruit and vegetables, there is plenty of bric-a-brac and secondhand furniture on offer at the Avondale Sunday Markets, especially when it’s not raining. The seller here obviously had an eye for the whimsical.
