Location Signs: New Lynn

I don’t know when this sign at the corner of Great North and Portage Roads appeared, but I don’t think it is all that long ago. The last time I took note of the brick wall, it still proclaimed itself as Waitakere City, but with the arrival of the Auckland super city (and corresponding demise of Waitakere City), there had to be a change sooner or later.…

Parau

Parau

Over some period of time, Bruce Courtney developed a landscaped area, detailed with rocks and planting, to welcome the visitor to Parau. Centerpiece is a lovely mosaic work, enclosing a lush puriri tree.

In addition, the former welcome sign just around the bend has been rejuvenated to great advantage.…

Balmoral

This sign is at the corner of Balmoral and Dominion Roads. I had not noticed it until a few days ago, don’t know if it is new. A few steps along is a bench made from the same material.

Titirangi --- Kate Millington

Titirangi --- Kate Millington

Some months ago, the welcome sign to Titirangi disappeared – all the mosaic tiles had gone, leaving behind a bare backing board. Now a replacement has gone up, made by the original artist: Kate Millington. As before, it features fern fronds, bush-clad hills, the sea, and above all the sky (Titirangi is often translated as “Fringe of Heaven”).…

Waitakere City — R.I.P.

Location Signs: Waitakere City

Location Signs: Waitakere City

This sign indicates where you reached Waitakere City, entering New Lynn as you come from Avondale along Great North Road, at the intersection with Portage Road. As befits the brick and clay heritage of New Lynn and other western suburbs, the letters are affixed to a modest brick wall.…

Location Signs: Whatipu

In contrast to the other location signs, this is an un-welcome sign – keep dogs away from the nature reserve at Whatipu. And appropriately, this sign is at Little Huia, at the beginning of the 8km winding road to Whatipu.…
