The Oakley Creek shared path runs between Unitec and New North Road, Mount Albert. About halfway along is this pou (guardian pole).

Te Whitinga (The Crossing)

The elegant pedestrian/cyclist bridge, is named “Te Whitinga” (The Crossing). It spans State Highway 20 at the Alan Wood Reserve, Mount Albert, and is beautifully illuminated at night.

Wonder Tree — Idesia Polycarpa

At the “Rocket Park” playground in Mount Albert one finds apair of rather tall Wonder Trees (Idesia polycarpa) – and right now they are laden with their grape-like pendents of bright red berries.

You guessed it: it’s a weed (introduced plant which spreads easily). Native to South East Asia.

The volcanic Mount Albert seen through the noise barrier at Methven Road (in the trench immediately behind is the construction site of State Highway 20).

Mount Albert (135m high) is a scoria cone, one of many such cones on the Auckland Volcanic Field. Age unknown.

Steam engines or electric? — Well, neither of the two: at present our Western line is still running on diesel engines, to be replaced by electric trains late this year (I think). But the overhead wires are installed and the warning signs in place. Richardson Road, Mount Albert.

Five metres high and bright red, this sculpture “Tree” by Caroline Rothwell stands at the back of Rocket Park, Mount Albert.

A quaint old-fashioned bus shelter, constructed from volcanic scoria rocks, embedded in the walls of Alice Wylie Reserve, Mount Albert.
