How Convenient! #8

Bellwood Avenue Convenience

Bellwood Avenue Convenience

A mural showing a tui in a kowhai tree disguises the public conveniences in Bellwood Avenue, near Dominion Road. The bird theme continues with fine tile work of birdlife.

A beautiful day yesterday, as we looked out across the crater of Mount Eden to Mount Victoria and North Head on the other side of the Harbour, with Rangitoto Island in the back.

Artists in Eden

A sequence of pictures from last Saturday’s “Artists in Eden” event. An annual event, usually held in brilliant weather in the Essex Road Reserve, Mount Eden. Artists showing what they are doing and how it is done, with plenty of opportunity to interact. Works auctioned off for community projects at the end of the exercise. This year’s weather did not oblige, but the Mount Eden Village Centre provided an excellent alternative.

A special room was set aside for young artists to express their talents. Great idea.

Links to individual artists in the pictures (as far as I could find them):

Mike Morgan, John Pusateri, Geoff Tune, Rebecca Tune, Sam Thomas, John Horner

The Hand

Hand by Bootleg Design

Hand by Bootleg Design

On a train journey to the city, I noticed this hand beside the railway line (Haultain Street, Eden Terrace). It turns out that it belongs to Bootleg Design, creators of themed interiors, 3D models, sets and props. From their website:

Looking to make an impact with your visual display, advertising shoot, interactive exhibition or retail / entertainment centre? Or perhaps you need ‘ice’ that never melts, a piece of ‘chocolate’ 2 metres by 4 metres or a 3-dimensional sign promoting your products or company? Look no further.”

This hand is actually made of some kind of plastic, with a surface treatment imitating rust.

Mount Eden

With 196 metres above sea level, Mount Eden is the highest elevation on the Auckland isthmus, one of over 50 volcanoes that characterise our landscape. Its crater is 50 metres deep (I assume that is measured from the summit), and here we look up from the lowest point of the rim.

Mount Eden erupted about 28,000 years ago.
