Jazz up your Lunchtime!

Pedro Olding

This was the invitation on the poster, and it came from Lopdell House who are currently in exile in New Lynn while their old building is undergoing “seismic strengthening”. Right in front of their current premises is Todd Triangle (whose brick sculptures by Peter Lange have graced these pages earlier). And all the facilities are there to have a wonderful party.

Tuesday, April 30, was a good date, as it marked International Jazz Day. And the Bourbon St Jazz Band were willing and able to provide great musical entertainment: Peter Fielding (saxophone), Lance McNichol (guitar), Pedro Olding (bass), Rod Redgrave (drums).

Some more pictures are here.

I arrived in the village just in time for the closing bars of Peter’s performance on Saturday afternoon in the village. Peter Fielding is a singer/songwriter and performs with energy and passion, accomplished on guitar and saxophones.

Peter is also the Titirangi barber – now residing at the Soul Center at 18 Huia Road since Lopdell House has been turned into a major construction site. Call him on 0272 612 615.

I should have held the dates free for the Titirangi Festival (yesterday and today). As it happened, I caught just half an hour of yesterday’s performances in the village, a feast indeed. Here images of the Indo Jazz Fusion Group.

Once again the annual Swiss Market was held in beautiful weather. Plenty of stalls, and big crowds filled the Danish House and its car park. The interludes by the alphorn quartet are always a big hit.

Titirangi Festival of Music 2012

Flags, Clouds, Lopdell House

Flags, Clouds, Lopdell House

Flags are up, dramatic clouds in the sky, fragments of music are drifting over to Lopdell House — the Titirangi Festival of Music 2012 takes hold of the village.

“Old favourites such as The Hardware Cafe Jazz Club and singer songwriter performances blend with new concerts and venues. TFM is thrilled to present a fabulous collection of events, worthy of the famously unique, artistic and bohemian tastes of Titirangi. Once one of the super city’s secrets, but not so anymore.”

Chicane Duo at CEAC

Chicane Duo at Corban's Homestead

Last Saturday/Sunday was the West Artists’ Open Studio Weekend 2011, and the Corban Estate Arts Centre (CEAC) had its doors wide open. As on some other special occasions there was a cafe in operation, serving food and beverages on the verandah, with live music all along.

Here we see the Chicane Duo of Max Purdie, keyboard, and singer Petra Rijnbeek as they lifted our mood away from the less than perfect weather into an altogether more congenial realm.

On the left you can also spot signs of the presence of the knitters, in the background is the church of St Michael and All Angels which we showed from a different angle earlier.

Nigel is a DJ, and also volunteers with the community radio station Radio Ponsonby 107.7 FM. On Monday’s Great Kiwi Bake-Off for Christchurch he was working away in the shade of his gazebo, providing just the right amount of easy background music to lift your spirits. Nice meeting him. Living in Huia, he’s from the West!
