Over some period of time, Bruce Courtney developed a landscaped area, detailed with rocks and planting, to welcome the visitor to Parau. Centerpiece is a lovely mosaic work, enclosing a lush puriri tree.

In addition, the former welcome sign just around the bend has been rejuvenated to great advantage.…

The Lower Nihotupu Dam provides some of Auckland’s drinking water, and is a delight for photographers. This bridge is the access to the controls for the dam, access prohibited.

Lower Nihotupu Reservoir is one of the lakes in the Waitakere Ranges which contribute to Auckland’s water supply. While the lake is off limits to humans, a range of birds take full advantage of it. Here we see a small flock of pied stilts (Himantopus himantopus, poaka) which have just flown in from the Manukau Harbour at full tide.…

The spillway of the Lower Nihotupu Dam is perfectly constructed to line birds up neatly to be photographed, especially when the water is up to the top and just overflowing. Three spurwinged plovers (they are called masked lapwing in Australian and Vanellus miles in Latin) have flown in for a brief rest and some serious preening.…
