Painted Boxes: Locomotive

This cute steam engine (painted, I think, by Dan Mills) graces a utility box in Ranui (intersection Ranui Station Road and Marinich Drive South).

Bookstack, Ranui

This utility box is in Ranui, by the Community House and the former library (a new library has just been opened diagonally across the intersection – we shall visit this in the near future). The subject matter is obvious: loads and loads of books, be it “War and Peace” or “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, the Bible or “Legends of Maui”, “The Bone People” or Lisa J. Truttman’s “Heart of the Whau”. Lisa is a local historian, tirelessly producing the “Timespanner” as blog and on Facebook, where she shares the results of her historical research. Good to find her work in such illustrious company! “Heart of the Whau” is a history of Avondale Central, available online, with hard copies held at various Libraries.

Two other titles stand out; both, I think, fictitious: “Waitakere City Council Librarians: a Tribute” (a thoughtful title of the artwork on this box?), and “How to Paint Power Boxes” by Diane Rimmer, the latter presumably a clever way to hide an artist’s signature – just my speculation. (Confirmed, see comment by Diane below.)

NZ Cheese Man

On Fridays, 4:30-8:00 p.m. there is a twilight market at the Ranui Community Centre. The NZ Cheese man is there, with a range of cheeses, mostly sourced from the South Island. He can also be found at the Farmers’ Market in Oratia on Saturday mornings.
