AEPB 1942

Balmoral Electric Power substation in Balmoral Road, Sandringham, in a stripped art deco style like a number of substations in Auckland. AEPB stands for “Auckland Electric Power Board”, and 1942 was a good year.

In the course of electricity reforms (separating the generating and distribution roles), AEPB became “Mercury Energy” in 1993.

How Convenient! #3

Old Sandringham Conveniences

Old Sandringham Conveniences

Another art deco style toilet block bearing the initials of the Mount Albert Borough Council. While the facade looks quite attractive, the building is out of service, but never fear, a (less monumental) modern facility is close by.

This cheerful mural caught my eye recently. Painted by Ekaterina, next to the vegetarian Mumbai Chaat in Kitchener Road, Sandringham.

The Fence

The Fence

… make colourful work, at least on this fence at the Kitchener Street car park in Sandringham – and especially in winter.

Skywatch: Which Sky?

Corner Potter and O'Donnell Avenues, Sandringham

Corner Potter and O'Donnell Avenues, Sandringham

These fine period houses are found at the corner of Potter and O’Donnell Avenues, Sandringham, complete with ever-blue sky: indeed, the entire scene from the rock wall to the houses to the sky is just a mural on a wall which curves around the corner, with a shop to the right and a launderette to the left of the picture. The sky on top, however, was genuine.
