Jacobs Ladder Bridge

The Jacobs Ladder Bridge (crossing State Highway 1 and on- and off-ramps by Fanshawe Street) in late afternoon sun. Enclosed in glass panels, some with patterns, some plain, and angular beams. (Faults in the panels delayed the opening of the bridge by the best part of a year.)

Jacobs Ladder is a steep staircase going down the cliff at St Marys Bay, through beautiful pohutukawa trees. To the left of the picture, the ramp leads down to Beaumont Street, to the right is the approach to the pedestrian bridge mentioned in yesterday’s post.

Access to Pedestrian Bridge, St Marys Bay

In the construction of the tunnel for State Highway 1 at the Fanshaw Street approach to the Auckland Harbour bridge, a new pedestrian bridge was built, allowing access from the heights of St Marys Bay via Jacobs Ladder to Westhaven Drive. Alas, due to unexpected problems with transparent panels, the opening of the bridge was delayed for the best part of a year. According to Phoebe Falconer of the NZ Herald, it will open today.

This is the access from Westhaven Drive.
