A Tree of Two Halves

Illawarra Flame Tree

Illawarra Flame Tree

For months this tree has delighted motorists going west along Ash Street (map) with its magnificent display of bright red blossom. It is an Illawarra Flame Tree (Brachychiton acerifolius), which drops its leaves around October, all the better to show off its flowers. This particular tree splits into two at about 1 metre high, and the two parts obviously are not coordinating their act, so we have a two-coloured display, even better.

Edit: the December 21 post shows the tree again, but with the right half in flower, and foliage on the left.
